PEZ candy was created in 1927 in Vienna, Austria, by Eduard HaasIII. He developed a compressed peppermint mint as a breath freshener and a stylish, healthy alternative to smoking. The name PEZ comes from the German word for peppermint, "PfeffErminZ"
The candy's evolution into the fruity, dispenser-based treat known today involved several key shifts in marketing and product design. In 1948, inventor Oscar Uxa created the first PEZ dispenser. The rectangular dispenser was designed to look like a cigarette lighter and hygienically dispense one mint at a time. In 1955, the company began adding three-dimensional heads of popular characters to the top of the dispensers, transforming it from a simple dispenser into a toy.
